F2 Understanding Our World
Camping
At the beginning of the summer term we did a class survey to find out what everyone wanted in our outdoor role play. Our choices were; an emergency centre, a camp site or a treasure island. After tallying the votes the camp site was a clear winner!
Exploring Senses
Mud Kitchen
We have loved the F2 Mud Kitchen! We create our own recipes and wrote our menus on the board to let our customers know what delicious food we have on offer.
Egg
Writer George has been on an adventure to the rainforest. We brainstormed all the things we already knew about rainforests and then thought of some questions to George to help us find out more. We skyped him the next morning and asked our questions.
He was pleased to hear from us and told us he had sent us something special in the post. We waited patiently for the post man, and Mrs Carnell brought our parcel down to F2. |

We couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw a huge egg. In George’s letter he asked us to take care of it until he returned. We waited patiently and after a few days the egg hatched and a baby dinosaur came out!
Caterpillars and Butterflies
We have been learning about the changes that happen in the life cycle of a butterfly. The caterpillars lived on our ‘Talk Table’ for us to observe and discuss. Once they had changed into their cocoons we had to be very careful with them. We moved them to the butterfly garden and waited patiently for them to become butterflies. They were beautiful! |
Waterproof Materials
Another science investigation we enjoyed was to do with finding out which materials were waterproof and which materials weren’t.
We put on our white coats for this investigation and ventured outside with our water bottles. We recorded our results and compared them to one another’s.

Baking
We visited the bakery at Asda to find out what a baker does and how to make bread.
We brainstormed our ideas for our role play and collected all the things we needed for ‘The Baker’s Shop’.

This term we have been doing lots of baking with different ingredients. We have been noticing what is the same and what is different. Everybody was brave enough to try the bread, cake and biscuits we made and most of us really liked them. |

Exploring Changes Within Our Environment
As budding scientists we have been exploring changes within our environment and thinking about the questions ‘What is the same?’ and ‘What is different?’
Some of the changes we explored included melting ice and making bread, cakes and biscuits.

Chinese New Year
We found out about Chinese New Year.
We made dragons on the workstation and painted Chinese characters. We used chopsticks to practise our fine motor skills picking up noodles and vegetables. |

Harvest
To enrich our learning about Harvest, Foundation 2 visited the school allotment in small groups. We found lots of fruit and vegetables and had great fun learning their names and harvesting them! We found carrots, beetroot, grapes, courgettes, pumpkins, peppers, beans, potatoes and lots and lots of apples!
We brought all the fruit and vegetables back to school with us. We then washed them and got them ready for our Harvest Celebration. The food we had collected then went to St. Paul’s Soup Kitchen on Lenton Boulevard to help make soup. “At the allotment the carrots were in the ground but the courgettes were on top of the soil.” Noah |

Making Apple Crumble
|
We harvested so many apples at the allotment that we were able to keep some and make apple crumble with them. Peeling and chopping the apples was hard work and we had to use the peelers and knifes really carefully. Making the crumble was messy as the butter was really sticky! Our fingers were really busy rubbing all the mixture together to create the crumbs. Once the apple crumble was cooked it was really interesting to see the changes that had taken place.
“The apples get soft because they were in the oven, the oven was hot.” Mikolaj |
Harvest Assembly
Singing songs is one of our favourite ways of learning new vocabulary in the Foundation Stage. For our Harvest Assembly we learnt a song about a ‘Big Red Combine Harvester’ – but what is a combine harvester? We researched our question on the internet and found a video that showed us how this huge machine cuts wheat and other grains. We really enjoyed performing our song at the Harvest Assembly.
