Year 1 - Literacy
Traditional Tales
We have been focusing on Traditional Tales within our literacy. Our first lesson involved being detectives and using the clues to work out which traditional story we all had.
We then focused on the story of ‘The Gingerbread Man’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood.’ We did lots of activities with both stories including role play, story maps and writing our own versions. |

Book Week
During Book week Year 1 focused on a story about Robin Hood. We loved learning about the story and completing lots of drama for each of the scenes. The story was funny, exciting and full of adventure. We were also very lucky to have Mrs Toogood a drama specialist come to join us for a lesson. |

Library Visit
During book week Year 1 visited the library. While we were there we were very lucky for the librarian to show us all the different books and read us a story. We were then able to explore the range of books that were there and chose one to read.

Alishba – ‘I really enjoy visiting the library and I loved getting to read different books.’ |
The Railway Children
As a school we focused on the story of the Railway Children which everyone really enjoyed. In year 1 we completed a range of different work on the story such as predictions, character descriptions and role plays. Here we are completing our own freeze frames of the different scenes.
Also, we were very lucky to have a theatre company visit the school and perform the story. |
|
Kites
As part of our literacy and history topics Year 1 designed their own kites.
When designing we need to consider the materials we would use and its appearance. The next day we used our designs to make our kites which was great fun. |
|
Ipads
As a school we have been really lucky to have bought a set of I-pads to enhance our ICT education!
Here’s Year 1 using them for the first time to complete their persuasive advert!
Stories With Repetitive Phrasing
We have been looking at stories with repetitive phrasing.
One of the stories we looked at was ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see?’
We found the repetitive phrase and then sequenced the story using pictures. We used the pictures to retell to our partners.

We found the repetitive phrase and then sequenced the story using pictures. We used the pictures to retell to our partners.
From this we planned our own adaptation of the story and here are a few for you to read.
