Year 2 History
Victorian Day in Key Stage 1
On Wednesday June 17th, Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed a wonderful Victorian day. Everybody came to school dressed in costume and we welcomed Mistress Lisa to organise our day.
The day began with the children learning what it would have been like to have been a Victorian school child. We had hand, nail and shoe inspection, Arithmetic, History of our Kings and Queens and writing, first on slates and then using ink dip pens. We found this very tricky and squeaky! |

The children went outside for ‘drill’ and were then allowed to play with outdoor games like marbles, wooden hoops, skittles, ribbons, horses and skipping ropes. Finally, Eva was punished with the cane on her knuckles (only pretending!) and Dan was made the Dunce! We all had to laugh at him but Dan was a very good sport.
For the rest of the day, we learnt what it would be like to be a Victorian servant and carried out jobs like setting the table, scrubbing, polishing, washing and using a mangle. We then played with indoor games like Jacob’s ladders, indoor skittles, puppets, Zoetropes and learnt some Parlour games. It was a wonderful and very educational day for all of us.

Victorian Homes
Year 2 completed some amazing homework over the May half term. They were asked to research Victorian homes and the present the information however they wished.
The results were fantastic and the children put so much effort into their work. They made books, posters, leaflets and laminated information cards. Year 3 were so impressed by all their work that they asked if they could share it so we spent an afternoon together reading the information in pairs and explaining how and where they got their information. |

Trip to Sherwood Forest
|
On Wednesday December 3rd Year 1 and 2 had a fantastic day out at Sherwood Forest to enrich our History topic.
We learned about Robin Hood and what it was like to live in medieval times from one of the Merry Men, Robert of Wentworth. We walked through the forest in the beautiful winter sunshine and were lucky enough to be allowed to go close to the Major Oak and actually look right inside! After lunch we explored the Robin Hood Exhibition and Santa’s Grotto and spent our money in the shop. Finally there was just enough time to play with our new toys in the woods before returning to school on the coach. |
Work on Mary Seacole - a True Heroine
In Literacy and History, our cross-curricular topic, we have been studying the work of Mary Seacole.
We saw how important she was as a nurse during the Crimean War and how well she cared for the soldiers. We found out that she would ride her horse right onto the battlefield and risk her own life to save them. The children were asked to re-enact Mary’s heroism and think of how the soldiers might have responded to her brave acts. They were then asked to write her a letter of thanks, pretending that they were one of the soldiers she saved. |
