Year 2 Science
Bestwood Park
On Friday January 16th, Year 1 and 2 went on a trip to Bestwood Park. The work done on the trip was to enrich our Science and Geography topics.
We began by looking at the plants and trees growing in the park. We learned how to identify different types of leaves and trees, for instance, Sweet Chestnuts, Silver Birch, Holly and Oak. We then got to know the trees better by talking to them, hugging them and then, with partners, we took it in turns to be blindfolded and to touch the trees. This helped us to understand more clearly how the trunk of each type of tree felt different and we were more able to identify them afterwards. We finished the morning by making a collage of colour from the nature we found in the park. |

The afternoon session was all about minibeasts and animals in the wood and how they choose their habitats. In our groups, we hunted for minibeasts that would make a good meal for a hedgehog. This was a dirty job but great fun! We found lots of worms, beetles, millipedes, wood lice and even snail eggs!
We finished the day by making dens in the wood for different creatures. Each group was given a soft toy animal to hide away in a den so that the foxes couldn’t find them. The children took this so seriously that it took us 20 minutes to find two rats that were extremely well hidden. Amy, our guide, was very impressed!
We all had a wonderful day out at Bestwood. It was freezing cold but we wrapped up warm and had great fun whilst learning at the same time.

Science-Plants and Animals
Planting Bulbs
On Wednesday November 5th, Year 2 planted daffodil bulbs around school.
This is part of our work in Science next term which will be focused on Plants. The children will be checking on the growth of their bulbs and recording it. |
