Year 5 Geography
River Trent Walk
On Wednesday, we headed out for a walk by the River Trent in the Meadows area of Nottingham.
We looked at Meadow Lane lock and found out all about what locks are and how they work. We're really looking forward to having a go at working a lock when we journey onto the river from the canal next half term on our narrow boat trip! We saw the markings on the wall near Trent Bridge that record past floods. We also looked at flood defences that have been put in place to protect the homes and other buildings that line the banks of this area. It was very cold throughout our visit but we found out lots and had a fantastic time and the cold was nothing an impromptu burst of aerobics couldn't solve! No pictures of the aerobics-sorry! |

We followed our route on a map of the area and marked key features onto our maps using a key and recorded other useful information that we found along the way.
Back in school, we collated our findings to write a response letter to a potential investor who is looking to bring their new business to the area but is concerned about flooding.
River Poems
Narrow Boat Trip
Year 5 and 6 spent three fantastic days out on the canal and the River Trent last week. We learned all about what they canals were built and used for and how this use has changed over time.
We all got chance to steer the boat too and work a lock to move the boat from water at one level to water at another level! It was a fantastic experience for us all and back at school we mapped our routes using Digimaps software and told a partner about the route we travelled. If you look closely at these maps, the purple line marks our route. |
Some lovely tweets from some of our helpers ....
