Y 5 RE
Advent Reflection Day
Today we spent time reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas and created an Advent calendar to help us to make sure we are preparing in the right way, by loving Jesus throughout Advent. We designed and made our own pocket for the calendar, cutting felt and sticking on decorations before sewing it together then put all them together to create this beautiful calendar! Inside each pocket is a mission or prayer for each day, to help us all to be more like Jesus. We shared our calendar in our celebration of mass at the end of the day where Father Bill also blessed our Advent wreath. |

Judaism Week
|
As part of our Judaism Week, Year Five shared a seder meal to help us learn about the special meal shared by Jewish people at Passover. We discovered that each part of the meal has a special meaning behind it. We also visited a synagogue where Rabbi Peres taught us lots about the Jewish faith. We had chance to get close to the Holy Torah scroll and even to hold some special items! |
"It was really fun and exciting because we got to discover a different faith." Zara
"I learnt that Jewish people are not allowed to touch the Torah so they would use a yad to touch the Torah which is a pointer." Cleo
"The thing I like the most was when I saw the Torah scroll close up." Courteney
"At the synagogue I felt eager to learn about the Jewish faith. I really enjoyed looking and learning about a different faith." Mia
Look at the fantastic work we've done at home for Judaism week!
Judaism Assembly
To conclude our week on Judaism, Year Five performed an assembly to share all that we have learned throughout the week.
We acted out a version of the story of the Exodus and explained how this story is remembered through the celebration of Passover once a year through the special seder meal. We also shared some of the things we learned during our visit to the synagogue earlier in the week and sang a song about peace. Thank you to all the friends and family that came to watch. We hope you enjoyed it! |

Belonging Topic Liturgy
To end our topic on ‘Belonging’ we planned a class liturgy to celebrate all that we have learned through the topic.
Cross Project
As in all classes, we've had a fantastic response in Year Five to the cross project, which was set for children to create crosses for the entrance to the school grounds at home.
Here's a peek at our fantastic designs! We enjoyed gathering for the grand unveiling on Wednesday where the crosses were blessed by Father David and think they look wonderful! Thank you to all the children and friends and families that contributed. |

Y5 Godlike Retreat Day – Monday 22nd September
Francis, our chaplain, led a retreat day for Year 5 in which we reflected on our current topic Ourselves.
We thought about what it means to be Godlike and follow in the image of God. We watched some video clips to help us think about people who have followed God such as Nelson Mandela and the Muzin family and what qualities these people possess. We then created Godlike superheroes that demonstrate these qualities. |
|
We thought about how we can apply these things to our own lives and how we could behave like these people and follow in God’s footsteps.
In the afternoon, we created a liturgy to celebrate everything we have learned about living in the image and likeness of God.
